Rant Of The Day
December 2020
Dear German and otherwise Internet News Portals
As member of IAB or user of its "standards", in recent times you started to put up extraordinarily detailled cookie acceptance popups on your pages.
These all look almost the same everywhere. They are obviously designed to look like opt-in, but use all available tricks to get that opt-in
by default, casual user action. The almost-at-the-same activation on all kinds of news portals, further plays with customers being tired of
dealing with this on a case by case basis, further making them just click the allow-all-the-shit suggested defaults.
Concrete such tricks being:
- making a colored-background, default looking "accept everything" button
- so the visually opted-out checkmarks, won't actually count, because making them count, needs the user to press the almost hidden, low contrast,
white background "accept choices" button on the side
- main popup having unselected check boxes, and little easily overlooked links to "details"
- which then poop up additional many many button selections, all enabled and not disabled, which will be accepted if the user does
not uncheck them all AND use the "accept choices" thing.
I hereby want to inform you that my personal reaction, from now on, whenever seeing such a popup, regardless of the site, and whether I was
a reader or subscriber even, before, will be CLOSE TAB, and where I was a subscriber, cancelling the subscription.
Best wishes and tough luck having your business survive
